About Storm Drain Services

Introduction to Storm Drains

Grosse Pointe Farms, a city brimming with commercial properties, is well-known for its urbanized landscape, enchanting waterfront views, and charm. With such an environment, an efficient stormwater management system, specifically the storm drain system, becomes essential. Storm drains – crucial infrastructures of the city, play a cardinal role in preventing floods, conserving the environment, and safeguarding properties against water damage. This guide provides an all-encompassing insight into the storm drainage system, its benefits, and applicability in the area, encouraging Grosse Pointe Farms businesses to explore the benefits of a proper storm-water set-up.

Understanding the Storm Drain System

An integral part of the city infrastructure, the storm drain system consists of interconnected components such as storm drain catch basins, storm drain pipes, grates, and manholes. Together, they collect and direct rainwater away from the property to prevent flooding or puddling.

Take the storm drain basin, for instance. It acts as the first line of defense against flooding, trapping large debris and slowing water flow into the storm drain pipe. The storm drain pipe, made from materials such as concrete or plastic, then transports this stormwater to the storm sewer or natural bodies of water. The storm drain grates protect the system from large debris that might cause blockages, while the storm drain manhole allows for easy access during maintenance or repair efforts.

The Significance of an Efficient Storm Drain System

One of the strongest assets Grosse Pointe Farms businesses can have is a robust storm drain system. If well-maintained, it helps prevent irreversible property damage due to excess rainwater or flooding, saving sizable costs related to cleanup and repair. This system helps maintain unobstructed traffic flow during heavy rains and plays a pivotal role in keeping the environment clean by preventing contaminants from flowing into water bodies. Additionally, a well-maintained storm drain ensures compliance with regulations governing the municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4), ensuring businesses avoid costly fines and penalties.

Real-World Applications

Parking lots, arguably, are some of the most common places where storm drain systems come to the rescue. Parking lot storm drains, equipped with grates, catch basins, and a channel storm drain, help prevent pooling and keep the space accessible regardless of the weather. Storm drains are not confined to outdoor use; they are also used indoors. For instance, the storm drain pump helps keep basements and low-lying utilities dry during heavy rains.

Residential properties also reap the benefits of well-installed storm-water systems. Instances like installing a catch basin in the backyard keep stagnant water at bay and safeguard the property from water logging and its subsequent damage. From storm drain basins in the street storm drain to the storm sewer in the backyard, stormwater solutions pervade various aspects of urban life.

Essential Maintenance

Keeping your storm drain system functioning optimally requires regular inspection, cleaning, and, where needed, repairs. Over time, storm drains can get clogged with soil, debris, or waste, which then necessitate the services of storm drain cleaning contractors. Beyond the routine measures, installing the storm sewer line correctly, managing hydro jet storm drain cleaning, and knowing when to opt for storm sewer repair hold significant importance. When things go haywire, it’s time to consider storm drain professionals like D&J Contracting.

About Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan

The area that would become Grosse Pointe Farms was originally incorporated as the Village of Grosse Pointe in 1879. By 1889, the village extended from land just above Provencal Road in the northeast to Cadieux Road in the west. In 1893, the portion of the village east of Fisher Road broke off and incorporated as the Village of Grosse Pointe Farms after a dispute over the location of a tavern. It was not until 1949, however, that the village incorporated as a city.

The U.S. Postal Service operates the Grosse Pointe Post office in Grosse Pointe Farms.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.32 square miles (31.91 km), of which 2.75 square miles (7.12 km) is land and 9.57 square miles (24.79 km) is water. The water is part of Lake St. Clair.

The Farms has a more varied topography and streetscape than the other southern Grosse Pointes. While Grosse Pointe and Grosse Pointe Park are built on a standard street grid and are basically flat, Grosse Pointe Farms is partially built on the same grid flowing out of Detroit, but also features districts with irregular, curving street paths. A low but noticeable ridge runs through the center of the city. The Farms also contains the “point” in Grosse Pointe, where, just east of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, there is a large bend in the lakeshore, such that those on the shoreline face east, instead of south, as they do when on the shoreline of neighboring Grosse Pointe, closer to the entrance of the Detroit River.

The cityscape varies widely, with large sections of old homes ranging from bungalows to mansions, and a few newer sections with ranch houses or luxury homes built on subdivided estates. The Farms has a downtown on Kercheval Avenue combining historic buildings with newer, neo-traditional storefronts.
