When Asphalt Grinding Is the Right Solution
Asphalt grinding uses a rotary cutting drum to remove a controlled depth of surface material. It can be used as a standalone service or as preparation for overlay or resurfacing.
Common applications:
- Trip hazard elimination — Raised joints, uneven transitions, and high spots ground flush without tearing out and replacing pavement
- Overlay preparation — Grinding the existing surface before an overlay creates a clean, profiled bonding surface and allows the overlay to match surrounding grades
- Drainage slope correction — High spots causing ponding can be reduced to improve drainage flow
- Edge correction — Asphalt edges that have heaved or settled ground to meet adjacent surfaces cleanly
- Old marking removal — Grinding removes ghost lines before restriping
Asphalt Grinding vs Full Milling and Overlay
Grinding (small-scale): Targeted removal at specific problem locations — a raised joint, a high spot, a transition hazard. Precision equipment, measured in linear feet or small square footage. Often a same-day operation.
Milling (large-scale): Full removal of the surface course across a large area in preparation for new overlay. Large equipment, measured in square yards. Part of a larger milling-and-overlay project — not a standalone repair.

Can asphalt grinding fix trip hazards without full replacement?
Yes. Grinding is the most cost-effective solution for most trip hazards at raised joints and uneven transitions. If the raised area is less than 2-3 inches, grinding is typically sufficient and far less expensive than replacement.
Does grinding damage the surrounding asphalt?
No. Precision equipment removes only targeted material. The ground area will have a slightly different texture than surrounding pavement, which is normal and does not affect function.
Can you grind concrete trip hazards as well?
Yes. We grind both asphalt and concrete trip hazards. Concrete sidewalk joints are among the most common grinding applications.
How long does grinding take?
Most grinding jobs complete in a few hours. Equipment is truck-mounted. We can schedule grinding as part of a larger site visit or as a standalone service call.
