About Drainage French Drain Services

Introduction

To manage water run-off efficiently and protect your commercial property in Oxford from potential water damage, the Drainage French Drain system is a tested and trusted solution. As a cost-effective, highly efficient way to redirect surface water and ground water, this comprehensive guide will draw on its real-world application to highlight how French Drains can be a game changer in urban property management. In this in-depth exploration, we will examine the process of installation, the results you can expect, and the impressive benefits it holds for your property.

Understanding the French Drain System

The French Drain System, sometimes referred to as a french trench drain or French ditch, is essentially an ingeniously simple concept. It consists of a slightly sloped trench filled with round gravel or a pipe filled with water, encompassing french drain pipes or a geotextile. The French Drain efficiently collects and redirects surface water and ground water away from an area. This can be applied in various areas such as basements (french drain basement), yards (French drain in yard, lawn french drain), and around the house (french drain around house). Ensuring the water flows away protects the integrity of your property – whether it be a basement, driveway, buildings, or landscape.

Laying the French Drain

Being aware of the process of laying a french drain is crucial to appreciate its efficiency. Constructing a french drain commences with an excavation; a trench that slopes away from the house or building is dug. It is then filled with gravel or a pipe, usually a perforated one that is sheathed by a fabric sock to prevent clogging from sediments. Additionally, a layer of gravel is added above which is then finished off with soil, grass, or a hard surface, such as a driveway. Long-lasting and low maintenance, the French Drains serve as a silent guardian against water damage.

Benefits of French Drains

The advantages of installing a French Drain are manifold. In addition to being cost-effective, it is eco-friendly as the water can be directed towards a garden or rainwater harvesting system. Furthermore, the installation process is relatively fast and they require very little maintenance. French drains for yard drainage prevent soggy lawn issues and potential basement flooding. Ensuring a dry foundation with french drains eliminates the risk of structural damage, mould, and dampness. For driveways, a driveway french drain would divert excess water to protect the surface. All these factors culminate in boosting the value of your commercial property.

Real-world Applications of French Drains in Oxford

For commercial properties in Oxford, French Drains have been gaining in popularity over the years. Many businesses situated near the River Thames benefit from installing a french drain system as it effectively maintains a dry and safe environment despite the threat posed by the river’s water levels. The application of the system avoids potential water damages that can adversely affect business operations. In such a scenario, businesses can have French drains installed around a building’s perimeter or in yards or specific areas prone to high water levels. D&J Contracting have been at the forefront of providing such services.

About Oxford, Michigan

During the early 19th century the northeast Oakland County area was largely avoided by the early settlers because it was believed to be nothing but impenetrable swamp land. The area was, at that time, nicknamed “The Barren Plains of Oxford.” It was called this primarily because of a report made in 1812 by the U.S. Surveyor General that described the area as a poor, barren, sandy land, on which scarcely any vegetation could grow with the exception of some very small scrubby oaks. It was concluded in the surveyors’ report that there was one acre out of one hundred that appeared to be eligible for cultivation. Any hope for crop production was thought to be preposterous. At this point, the area was deemed worthless, and discouragement of any hope for development by forthcoming settlers was inevitable.

Purchase of public land in what is now called Oxford was in 1823 by a man named Elbridge G. Deming. Soon after, the first person to settle in Oxford was a wolf trapper named Avery Brown. He made use of the land and gave some credibility to its value. It wasn’t long after that the first area post office was officially established in what was then known as Demingsburgh on May 2, 1834. Five years later, the name was officially changed to Oxford on January 15, 1839. Elbridge D. Deming was the first postmaster for Oxford, as the post office was located in his log home near the intersection of M-24 and Metamora Road.

On November 30, 2021, a mass shooting occurred at Oxford High School. Four people were killed, and seven others were injured, including an injured teacher. School attendance was very low that day, as rumors had spread earlier that week of a shooting being about to occur. Most of the students escaped into a nearby Meijer. The suspect, a 15-year-old sophomore student, reportedly fired between 15 and 20 bullets in a chemistry room and did not resist arrest.
