Concrete grinding removes material from raised or uneven surfaces using diamond-tipped equipment designed for commercial applications. It's the fastest and most cost-effective solution for most concrete trip hazards — far less expensive and disruptive than saw-cutting and replacing slabs.

Why Grinding Is Often Better Than Replacement
When a sidewalk joint heaves and creates a trip hazard, the instinct is to tear out and replace the slabs. In many cases, grinding is the smarter approach:
Grinding advantages:
- Far less expensive — grinding costs a fraction of slab replacement
- Same-day completion in most cases
- No concrete removal, no haul-off, no base disturbance
- No patching required — the ground surface is the finished surface
- The hazard is permanently removed, not just patched over
When replacement is necessary:
- The raised edge exceeds 2-3 inches — grinding that much material creates a slope that becomes its own hazard
- The slab is cracked through, unstable, or the underlying base has failed
- Drainage requires regrading the concrete surface
- The concrete has deteriorated beyond surface correction

How much can concrete be ground down?
Typically 1-2 inches maximum for trip hazard removal. Grinding more than that creates a slope that can introduce a new hazard. For larger height differentials, slab replacement is usually the right approach.
Does concrete grinding create a rough surface?
The ground area will have a textured profile rather than a smooth finish. This is normal and does not affect safety or function. Many property owners find the textured finish acceptable or even preferable in wet conditions.
Is concrete grinding ADA compliant?
Grinding to eliminate lips and raised joints on accessible routes is an ADA compliance measure. The resulting surface must meet slope requirements. We work with ADA specifications and can advise on compliance for your specific application.
Do you grind concrete at building entrances?
Yes. Building entrance transitions — especially ADA accessible entrances — are common grinding applications. We can eliminate lips at door thresholds, entry aprons, and transition zones.
How long does concrete grinding take?
Most grinding jobs are a few hours. Equipment is compact and truck-mounted. We can schedule concrete grinding as part of a site visit for other work or as a standalone call.
